Postdoctoral Research Fellow- Cell Biology and Translational Science

Postdoctoral position available immediately to study the role of mitochondrial and microtubule dynamics in the context of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.


We offer a postdoctoral position for a highly motivated, ambitious, and productive applicant with an interest in understanding the mechanism of mitochondrial and/or microtubule dynamics in the context of cancer and neurodegeneration. The position is available in the laboratories of Drs. Martina Bazzaro (http://www.neuroscience.umn.edu/people/martina-bazzaro-phd, https://med.umn.edu/bio/micab/martina-bazzaro) in the Masonic Cancer Center and at the University of Minnesota, USA.

For the longest time, cancer and neurodegenerative diseases have been considered at the opposite end of the spectrum of human diseases. That is because cancer is characterized by highly dividing cells that resist death while neurodegenerative diseases are generally characterized by death of post-mitotic cells. Today, genetic and cell biology studies show multiple common pathways in cancer and neurodegeneration. This includes pathways that regulate mitochondrial and microtubule dynamics in cells.

One project will explore the mechanisms through which UNC-45A, a novel Microtubule-Associated-Protein and regulator of paclitaxel sensitivity in human cancer cells, regulates microtubule dynamic in vitro (reconstituted microtubules,) in living cells (cancer cells and neurons) and in human clinical specimens of cancer and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Manuscripts from our laboratories are regularly chosen as featured articles and cover arts, and our laboratory members have consistently received funding and awards. This includes our latest manuscript on the role of UNC-45A in regulating MT stability which is published and featured in Journal of Cell Science and has an associate First Person interview with the joint first authors of the paper. The other project will explore the consequences of ARID1A loss on mitochondrial metabolism and dynamics in the context of chemoresistant ovarian cancer. This is part of the laboratory’s long standing interested in targeting metabolic pathways for treatment of human tumors. Both projects are highly collaborative in nature and includes collaborations with national and international laboratories.



Requirements

The applicant must have a Ph.D. in cell biology, biochemical engineering, neuroscience, biochemistry, or related field, and proven productivity with at least one first author publication. Applicants for this position should have expertise in live-cell fluorescent imaging, confocal microscopy, SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, invasion and migration assay along with an interest in studying microtubule dynamics,  human cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Finally, the applicant must be well versed in Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint, and graphing programs such as Prism. The applicant must be attentive and reliable with various modes of communication (email, texts) and must have the motivation to pursue and drive a project independently.
