About This Role:

The Department of Anatomy and Physiology in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant, Associate or Full Professor in pain neuroscience, animal welfare science or stress physiology. This is a full-time, 9-month position with rank and salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. The successful candidate will establish a vibrant, extramurally funded research program in the area of neuroscience research with a focus on pain. Candidates with a background in applied animal welfare or stress physiology are also encouraged to apply. This position will also be expected to deliver didactic lectures and laboratories in physiology to support the teaching mission of the department.

The successful candidate will devote approximately 60% of their time to establish a sustainable, extramurally funded research program in the area of pain physiology or neuroscience, or applied animal welfare. This position will be expected to devote 35% of assigned effort to delivering didactic lectures and laboratories in physiology and/or animal welfare to veterinary and graduate students in support of the teaching mission of the department. Service on department, college and/or university committees is expected to comprise 5% of the appointment.

The Department of Anatomy and Physiology is multi-disciplinary with responsibilities in instruction, research, service and continuing education including the disciplines of gross and microscopic anatomy, cell and systems physiology, pharmacology, toxicology and neuroscience. Research strengths in the department include: investigations establishing novel animal models for the study of pain, development of methods of pain assessment, and pain management strategies in livestock and companion animals, animal welfare science, neuroscience, epithelial physiology, exercise physiology and heart failure, stem cell biology, teaching methods and veterinary clinical pharmacology.

What You'll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • PhD in pain neuroscience, animal welfare science, animal behavior, stress physiology or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent.
  • An established track record of extramural funding success will be a prerequisite to be considered for a tenured position.
  • Experience in teaching professional students in veterinary or medical physiology is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with implementing novel approaches to assessing pain and distress in animal models is advantageous.
  • The successful candidate must have strong written and oral communication skills in addition to experience with scientific research techniques in the lab and field.
  • Candidates should enjoy working individually and as a team in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary research environment.
